How to Prepare the Joining Metal Parts Before Welding?

Here are some things you can do to prepare for welding:

Clean the metal
Remove any rust, grease, paint, dirt, or mill scale from the metal. You can grind or wipe away the contaminants. Leaving them behind can cause a failed or weakened weld.

Prepare the joints
Make sure the joints are clean and ready for welding. You can also check that the collets are clean and the workpiece sits flush.

Prepare the metal's edge
This is an important step that allows the filler metal and part edge to fuse together without melting.

Preheat the metal
For some welding jobs, you may need to preheat the part before welding it. You'll need to maintain the preheat temperature throughout the welding process.

Choose the right shielding gas
Selecting the right shielding gas can improve weld quality and save you time and money.

Other things you can consider include:

Making sure the metal is the right thickness

Ensuring there are no impurities

Placing the Work Return (Earth) Clamp on one of the pieces of metal to be welded

Making sure the upright piece of metal has sharp corners where it meets the flat piece of metal
