The combination (I.e. hybrid) resume melds the best features of the chronological and functional formats. Generally, combination resumes lead with a qualifications summary and skills list, followed by a reverse-chronological employment history.

This format allows you to state your most relevant qualifications at the top of the resume, while providing the employment timeline that hiring managers like to see. The disadvantage is that this hybrid format includes a detailed employment history, so job-hopping, gaps, and unrelated experience will be more apparent than they would be in a functional resume.

Step 1. Use an appropriate format and design

The combination resume is slightly different than the conventional formats you’re used to. While this is true, it doesn’t mean there are drastic changes when it comes to the layout.

All  components should be unique of flavor to your resume so that you stand out.

Step 2. Make a great resume header

Once you’ve got your resume format ready, it’s time to start off by including your resume header.

For any resume you have, this is always the first thing the recruiters should see. It includes your contact information along with any important pieces of detail you want recruiters to see at the beginning of your resume.

Step 3. Writing the summary section

You want to summarize your entire professional career, or you can make a summary of your skills. In some cases, you can incorporate both together.

More importantly, it needs to give employers insight that you’re a qualified candidate capable of getting the job done.

Step 4. Employment history

At this point, you want to start listing out the job titles you’ve held in the past. This should be accompanied by a description that describes your duties, role, responsibilities and the company success you contributed towards.

Step 5. Top skills and relevant strengths

What skills do you have that directly correlate with what the job recruiters need? 

How capable are you, and do you understand in full transparency what you’re getting yourself into?

Look your resume matches the job description, or if it’s missing something.

In the skills section, pick out one of the skills that are in high demand. Whatever skill you pick, be honest and confident that it’s something you’re exceptional at.

In the additional sections you could include are:

  • Publications
  • Languages
